HOW ARE WE
IMPACTING OUR COMMUNITY?
In the latter half of the 2023–24 school year
Black Men Read volunteers tutored 15 students (1st–5th grade) at Barack Obama Elementary School in Normandy School District, meeting twice weekly .
During summer 2024,
- Their summer reading program hosted around 30 children, offering 3½ hours of weekly individualized tutoring and literacy activities.
- Provided direct literacy support to dozens of K–5 students through tutoring and summer engagement,
- Built volunteer capacity, training ~25 tutors equipped with evidence-based methods, and
- Positioned itself as an active, scalable intervention in a city where 80–87% of Black students struggle with reading.
